Next time you are in a shopping centre or a hospital, think of the hidden services that are helping you to have a quiet, controlled climatic experience. Often, they’re provided by B & D Insulation Contracting, which for 14 years has supplied quality insulation and metal sheeting for air-conditioning, refrigeration and mechanical services installations in the places like Carindale Shopping Centre, Royal Brisbane Hospital and Griffith University.
Dominic Santoro bought B & D Insulation in 1998 and since then has grown the business by 150 per cent. In 2007 the company had 26 staff and revenues of $3million and Dominic began working with a ProfiTune Business Improvement Specialist to help formalise business planning, systemise processes and increase profits through efficiencies.
“We’ve been flat out in the booming building industry and here-in lies the problem”, says Dominic.
“The business has grown very quickly and trying to harness the profit is where I’m playing catch-up. It’s a labour intensive business and there is always that difficulty in balancing staffing levels with work coming in the door. As a result of lack of process planning, there seems to have been a fair bit of time wasting in our busy periods, which is a cost to the business.
“My goal is to manage the business better by increasing efficiencies, but I’m too busy to systemise my business processes on my own and that’s why I’m working with a ProfiTune Business Coach.
“Since we’ve grown so much I’ve just got to share the load, stop doing everything myself, get it out of my head and onto paper.
“One of the things that surprised me when we did the initial business analysis with ProfiTune was the profit that was just there waiting to be picked up in the business.
“What coaching has done is make me more conscious of strategic initiatives,” says Dominic. “Having someone external in each week helps keep me on track – it stops me from getting bogged down in the day to day and letting strategic stuff go where it tends to just snowball.
“It has made me more accountable to myself and also brought some new ideas into the business.”
Dominic has tried other coaching systems in the past with limited success. “They were quite difficult to apply. I like ProfiTune’s systems because they are more user friendly and they are highly results focused. ProfiTune’s system breaks the job down to focus on day to day strategic tasks, so it’s very practical.”
